Tonight returning from the All-Star break, the St. Louis Cardinals (50-45) are in Phoenix to face off against the Arizona Diamondbacks (49-47) at Chase Field. In their originally planned four game series shortened by a rain out back in June, the Diamondbacks took two of three against the Cardinals at luis daz Busch Stadium.

Taking the ball to lead off the top of the Redbirds rotation in the second half is RHP Michael McGreevy (4-7, 3.01 ERA), who in his last start against the Brewers on 7/8/2026 went 6.1 IP, allowing 5 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts en route to picking up his fourth win of the year. What stood out that night was the run support provided by the Cardinals offense for Michael McGreevy, giving him a whopping five runs! Otherwise that has been the Achilles heel for McGreevy in 2026, the Redbirds bats have been wildly inconsistent in their support of the right-hander. That al-fayha vs al qadsiah will once again be the question tonight (and going forward) for McGreevy, and how that question is answered will have a direct and serious impact on the Cards 2026 post-season birth prospects.

On the bump for the Diamondbacks this evening is the 37 year old RHP Merrill Kelly (7-8, 5.38 ERA). Kelly in his last start against the Redbirds in June at Busch Stadium tossed 6.0 IP, giving up 7 neom vs al-shabab hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks and 2 strikeouts in taking the loss to Andre Pallante. Merrill Kelly has gone 2-1 since that last start against St. Louis, throwing to a 4.00 ERA over 18.0 IP. However in 2026 Kelly has clearly underperformed at Chase Field, going 3-3 with a 7.44 ERA over 32.2 IP. Clearly Merrill Kelly will need to turn that trend around tonight against a Cardinals offense that has feasted playing on the road this year.

Will Michael McGreevy continue getting the run support he managed last time against Milwaukee? Can the Cardinals offense continue their offensive clinic when taking their show on the road? Join Paul D. for this first chapter of the 2026 second half, with scheduled first pitch at Chase Field set for 8:40 PM CST.
