I finished 2nd overall at HOPE12 with 13 laps, 65 miles and around 6,700 feet of climbing but I missed the chance to start lap 14 by just 24 minutes and 32 seconds.

So where did those 24 minutes go?

In this video, I break down my HOPE12 race properly: the heat management mistakes, the mid-block quad injury, the peak long runs I missed, the lack of consistent strength training, and the late-race muscular breakdown that meant the final descents became walks.

This isnt about turning a podium finish into a failure. Im incredibly proud of the race. But 14 laps was close enough that its worth asking what really happened and what Id need to change if I want to come back stronger.

Well look at the lap splits, the heat crisis, the winners pacing, the first female runners incredible race, and the exact point where 14 laps slipped away.

The big lesson? In ultra running, its rarely one mistake. Its heat, training, strength, pacing, sgarbi fuelling, durability and decision-making all stacking up over time.
